The Loudoun County Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure is seeking a self-motivated Senior Traffic Engineer within the department’s Traffic Engineering Program. This critical position will be responsible for applying thorough knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures for roadway safety engineering and crash analysis to complete complex, unique and challenging projects. The Sr. traffic Engineer will also be responsible for managing the internal and consultant resources engaged in projects, tasks and assignments related to roadway safety and operation problems in residential and business communities, and reviewing and analyzing traffic engineering studies and recommending solutions. This position will offer a unique opportunity to develop design standards and specifications. This position will work closely with elected officials and their aides, community leaders, County and VDOT staff at various position levels, citizens, and the development community. The Sr. Traffic Engineer will also be required to attend and provide presentations at community meetings. The successful candidate will have the ability to make sound engineering recommendations and assist with providing technical engineering alternatives and solutions to difficult and complex transportation issues in order to determine safe and efficient movement of people and goods, and must possess strong project management skills, leadership qualities, and technical knowledge in traffic engineering with a proven track record of successfully working with various stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, public speaking and presentation skills, the ability to provide prompt, effective and courteous customer service, conduct thorough research work independently and manage multiple time-sensitive projects/tasks will also be required.

This position requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, plus four of experience in traffic engineering or a related field. Required skills include: Experience in successfully managing traffic engineering projects independently, and addressing traffic safety and operational analysis. Knowledge of the current federal and state regulations, guidelines, design standards and specifications, such as the MUTCD, AASHTO, VDOT Traffic Engineering Design Manual and Virginia Supplement to the MUTCD. Ability to articulate technical information orally and in writing to lay and technical audiences. Experience working with the public, elected officials, and diverse staff in various position levels. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is required.
This position requires occasional attendance at evening/night meetings, as well as a valid driver's license. PE license is preferred.
