The Global Cellulose Fibers (GCF) Business is seeking an experienced senior process engineer to support new product development (NPD) efforts at our Global Innovation Center in Federal Way, WA. The responsibilities of this role are:
Provide process engineering, development and scale-up support to the GCF portfolio of new product development projects. Provide the process engineering/development leadership needed to bring product prototypes from bench scale, to pilot scale and to full commercial scale.
Support the development of pilot-scale operational capabilities where needed, fully leveraging/adapting existing in-house and third party capabilities.
Provide technical expertise to support the planning and execution of pilot-plant work focused on: 1) process development and 2) product prototype production for market development purposes.
Provide manufacturing and process engineering feasibility analysis support to NPD & Innovation teams to include flow sheet development and production cost analysis.
Provide optimization support for pilot and mill scale process development and trials
Support the capital scoping/development process for NPD & Innovation Center equipment and commercial facility needs – function as liaison to the Technology capital assessment team
Build a network of process engineering/development resources (e.g., from within the IP Technology Organization, outside consultants) so that the process engineering & development needs of the NPD portfolio are fully met.
This position reports into the New Product Development department.
Key duties for this position include the following:
Work with NPD project managers to understand and fulfill process engineering & development needs, priorities and timing.
Support NPD project team efforts to select or develop manufacturing approaches that are technically sound and economically viable.
Evaluate the GCF NPD organization’s ongoing need for process engineering & development support. Build a network of process engineering/development resources as needed to ensure NPD portfolio resource needs are met. Act as a liaison between the GCF NPD organization and:
the IP Technology Organization
the GCF Manufacturing Organization
Outside consulting resources
Interface with mills, engineering consultants, suppliers and prospective customers as needed to plan and execute pilot and full scale development programs and trials.
Provide process-related inputs (flow sheet development, heat & material balances, process models, etc.) to capital project scoping efforts needed for NPD commercialization. Support the development of capital and operating cost estimates and models for new product commercialization.
Utilize practical equipment-related skills and personal ingenuity to safely improvise cost- and time-effective approaches in order to accomplish pilot- and commercial-scale process development objectives
Implement improvements in technology and operations through external research
Independently pursue assignments within framework defined by client
Contribute innovative thinking and creativity to problem solving in specialty areas
Prepare and present proposals and reports or coordinates others’ reporting effort
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with: coworkers, clients, organizations across the company, key business partners, external organizations.
MS (preferred) or Bachelor’s degree in chemical or pulp & paper engineering (or other technical discipline with in-depth knowledge of pulp & paper products, processes and technologies).
Ten or more years of experience in relevant manufacturing environment(s) and/or consulting engineering role(s).
Proven capability to work safely in an industrial R&D or manufacturing environment. Highly focused on personal and team safety; proactive in ensuring that all work is conducted in a safe manner.
In depth knowledge of Kraft pulping and bleaching, stock preparation and machine room processes and equipment. Able to work safely with Kraft pulping and bleaching chemicals and other chemicals commonly used in the pulp & paper industry. Kraft mill production experience a plus.
Ability to select technical approach using standard and nonstandard techniques to solve highly complex problems
