NICTD intends to hire a Transportation Superintendent headquartered at Michigan City, Indiana. The Transportation Superintendent is responsible for all operational issues within the South Shore Line’s service territory (including the Metra Electric Division). Description: Duties include overall pro-active leadership of NICTD Transportation Department management and craft employees including, but not limited to, the following duties:
Key participant in the NICTD leadership team responsible for implementation of Positive Train Control.
Supervises all Transportation Department employees through the management team in myriad areas including, but not limited to, Customer Service, Operations Planning and Operating Efficiency.
Sets standards and reviews compliance in many areas, including efficiency testing and employee performance. This position also initiates corrective, decertification, and/or disciplinary actions when necessary. Conducts formal investigations as circumstances dictate.
Directs the development of efficient crew and equipment assignments.
Builds operating schedules; applies labor agreements for transportation crafts.
Performs on-site managerial response to customer service issues, situational incidents, and operating emergencies.
Works closely and cooperates with other departments and Metra on matters like track repairs, outages, and equipment maintenance to ensure maximum efficiency of all departments and overall railroad operations.
Maintains excellent working relationships with Metra, Chicago SouthShore and South Bend Railroad, and other internal and external customers.
Position Requirements: The following skills are required:
Five (5) or more years of supervisory or combined supervisory and operating experience in railroad operations. Familiarity with commuter, passenger, NICTD, and/or Metra Electric commuter operations is preferred but not required.
Demonstrated superior interpersonal skills and ability to work with the public, and employees and other departments within NICTD.
Thoroughly knowledgeable of the General Code of Operating Rules as well as all statutes and regulations applicable to railroad operations.
Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
Willing to work varied shift hours, varied days off, holidays, and extended hours as needed for customer and operational circumstances.
Basic or better proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
Superior safety, attendance, and work service records in the railroad industry.
Solid business writing communication skills.
Ability to multi-task among competing short term priorities while maintaining a pleasant disposition.
Information in NICTD personnel and attendance files may be considered as a factor in the final selection decision. Selection is also subject to satisfactory results from a physical examination (including drug and alcohol screening tests) and background evaluation (including criminal and trust-related criteria).
Additional Salary Information: Credit for time served in other railroad employment, including military leaves, will be applied in determining vacation day entitlements. About NICTD - South Shore Line
The South Shore Line is an innovative and progressive commuter railroad service operating between Chicago, Illinois, South Bend, Indiana, and intermediate points. NICTD is the agency responsible for the ownership and operation of the railroad. NICTD intends to improve its service through the installation of double track between Gary, Indiana, and Michigan City, Indiana ("Double Track NWI Project") and opening a new service between Chicago, Illinois, and Dyer, Indiana ("West Lake Corridor Project").
