The San Mateo County Transit District seeks an Engineer III (Track) to be responsible for railroad track engineering support for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain).
The Engineer III (Track) will ensure railroad track complies with engineering standards, including Positive Train Control (PTC) and are in a state of good repair and all construction activities follow return-to-service requirements, as well as ensure Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) compliance with railroad track engineering requirements. The Engineer will also ensure the railroad is in a state of good repair by monitoring third party contractors, liaise with internal and external stakeholders on railroad track related issues, ensure third-party designs that impact the Right of Way (ROW) are in compliance with all engineering design criteria and specifications and assist with the development of the annual, short-term and long-term railroad track engineering and maintenance plans.
The Engineer will be responsible for conducting project meetings and field meetings with internal and third party personnel, performing regular railroad track inspections and other site inspections during construction and maintenance projects to determine if they are within tolerance levels established by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and other applicable regulations, ensuring construction activities follow return to service requirements, overseeing maintenance of railroad tracks, coordinating the annual, short-term and long-term railroad track maintenance plans with capital projects and modifying the plans as required, updating railroad track-related engineering standards, developing, reviewing and providing technical input for capital and maintenance projects for compliance and cost effectiveness of the design and performing construction and maintenance budget and cost accounting. Must be able to provide 24/7 on-call construction and maintenance support.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or related field with five years of full-time progressively responsible professional experience in an engineering firm, railroad, utility, or public works agency. Must able to respond 24/7 to service and operational needs in a variety of weather and road conditions. Must possess effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills. Must possess a valid California driver license with safe driving record.
