The Agricultural Sciences Department, within the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) at Clemson University, is seeking to fill a position as a tenure-track Specialist at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Water Policy and Economics. This position is one of four tenure-track faculty hires foundational to a state-wide, strategic water initiative. The position is a 12-month appointment and is located at the SC Water Resources Center building ten minutes from the main campus. The desired starting date is July 1, 2019.

Balancing the supply and demand of water is a critical issue facing South Carolina over the next 50 years. Population growth, increasing water demand, contamination issues, drought and precipitation extremes have placed the state's water supply under tremendous stress. This position provides a link between the scientists and engineers and the state's regulatory agencies as they develop water use policies.
The successful candidate will (1) have strong interdisciplinary skills in terms of market and non-market evaluation and water valuation techniques and (2) be expected to develop a nationally-recognized, externally-funded research program regarding water valuation, natural resource services valuation, cost/benefit analysis of economic tradeoffs between competing sectors for water resources, and familiarity with regional economic impact models in estimating alternative growth. This position would work to quantify economic benefits to South Carolina resulting from natural/water resource protection for recreation, food production, flow regulation, waste treatment and climate stability. The hire would develop impact data connecting economic value from natural resources and their use in a timely manner and provide support for all related Extension programming. Applied research would likely include private and public utilization, economic risk of drought/climate change, commodity-based economics of irrigation, and mitigating water shortages in multiple risk environments.
Of added interest is expertise to link with interdisciplinary groups across campus in agriculture and engineering to pursue larger funding initiatives that address grand challenges in the food-energy-water (FEW) nexus and sustainable agriculture. The individual selected for this position will have an affiliation with the S.C. Water Resources Center and work closely with on- and off-campus research and extension personnel, external stakeholders, and state/regional/national government agencies.
Qualified candidates should hold a Ph.D. in public policy, agricultural economics, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of collaborative research, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated success in obtaining external funding to support an ongoing research program.

Our Department has a synergistic blend of environmental engineering, biosystems engineering, environmental science, geology and earth sciences, and nuclear environmental engineering and science. We offer several academic options to our students.
At the undergraduate level, we are committed to providing the next generation of environmental engineers and earth scientists a comprehensive understanding and skill set to tackle complex environmental issues and challenges. Our environmental engineering curriculum is versatile, allowing students to pursue a core curriculum that emphasizes areas that are traditionally associated with environmental engineering (e.g., water and wastewater treatment, solid and hazardous waste management, air pollution control, pollution prevention, natural systems, and risk assessment). Biosystems engineering combines the application of engineering science and design with biological and agricultural sciences. Environmental quality and natural resources are important aspects of the discipline. We emphasize two areas of biosystems engineering – bi...oprocessing and ecological engineering. For the geology degree, we provide specialization in traditional geology, environmental science, and hydrogeology. Unique to Clemson, all of our undergraduate geology students participate in research with a faculty member from their sophomore through senior year.
At the graduate level, we have distinct programs in 1) Environmental Engineering & Science (EE&S); 2) Biosystems Engineering (BE); and 3) Hydrogeology. The EE&S and BE programs offer MS and PhD degrees, while the Hydrogeology program offers an MS degree. Our programs are nationally recognized for their quality. The environmental engineering graduate program has been consistently ranked in the top 25 programs by U.S. News and World Report. Our graduates find employment across the United States. Today, there are more than 1000 EEES graduates.
As you will observe while exploring our web page, teaching and research activities in EEES reflect a comprehensive and highly interdisciplinary approach to studying environmental issues. Areas of focus include biosystems engineering, environmental chemistry, environmental fate and transport, hydrogeology, nuclear environmental engineering and science (targeted at environmental health physics (ABET accredited) and environmental radiochemistry), process engineering (targeted at water, wastewater and air treatment, and soil and groundwater remediation), and sustainable systems and environmental assessment. Diversity and depth are our major strengths. Our department is unique in that environmental engineering, biosystems engineering and earth sciences are housed within the same academic unit (i.e., EEES). This affords an opportunity to explore innovative and synergistic approaches for preparing our students to tackle complex environmental problems in both engineered and natural systems in the 21st century. Another unique feature of our department is the nuclear environmental engineering and science program; only a handful of such programs exist at universities around the country.
The department has 25 full-time faculty members, more than 20 adjunct faculty, more than 120 graduate students, and 200 undergraduate students. Excellence in environmental engineering has been a tradition at Clemson University for many years. Our program is the only one in the nation with three faculty members (Linvil G. Rich, Thomas M. Keinath, and C.P. Leslie Grady. Jr,) who have been honored with the prestigious Founders Award by the American Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors. Currently, six faculty members serve as editors or on the editorial advisory boards of prominent journals. The department houses four National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award recipients, the highest honor given to young faculty by the National Science Foundation. EEES faculty have also published five books in the past decade.
The Hydrogeology graduate program is one of only a few programs in the country to offer a degree specifically in hydrogeology. Students and faculty associated with this program perform research on a diverse range of topics that include contaminant transport and remediation, surface and groundwater interactions, enhanced oil recovery and natural gas storage, advanced well testing, constructed wetlands, geophysics, and mathematical modeling. We offer a unique summer hydrogeology field course that gives graduate and undergraduate students hands-on experience with field methods for vadose zone and groundwater system characterization, geophysics, and contaminated site characterization. This course is based in Clemson, where we have access to our own well field, and instrumented watersheds in the Clemson University Experimental Forest.
