The Patient Safety Manager coordinates the overall high reliability education and sustainment efforts to entrench culture of patient safety among the USA Health System staff and faculty; develops and delivers education at all levels, as well as leads the Safety Program; actively participates in the safety event classification process, including weekly classification activities, ongoing common cause analyses and supports development of annual patient safety related reports to department and organizational leadership; provides primary oversight of the patient safety program and responsibilities for strategic deployment of the patient safety initiatives that decrease risk of safety events based on incident reporting and issues that arise through ongoing monitoring and reporting; develops, reviews and updates annually the patient safety program to connect safety projects to the overall organizational strategic plan; coordinates the Safety Program across the USA Health system by developing safety program content in collaboration with leadership to support and sustain patient safety and high reliability objectives; provides input into the design of an effective patient safety plan through participation with leadership and as an active part of the Patient Safety and Adverse Events committee; identifies opportunities and representation on hospital committees; ensures timely investigation of patient safety issues; oversees/facilitates the root cause, apparent cause and common cause analysis investigations; collects, analyzes and presents data and analysis of patient safety trends to hospital committees as needed; maintains current working knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and statues that affect the Patient Safety Program, including Alabama Medical Board, Alabama Board of Nursing, The Joint Commission and HIPPA and ensures that services are being delivered in compliance with federal and state safety standards; manages the development, coordination and delivering overall education for Safety Starts Here (SSH) culture of high reliability at USA Health by creating and maintaining curriculum and education data in appropriate modalities; provides guidance and coordinates continuing education opportunities for staff to ensure professional development in patient safety and quality improvement; participates in professional self-development, education programs and community projects; maintains membership in professional organizations; develops both measurement and improvement strategies for assigned project areas; guides the work load of assigned areas ensuring complete and accurate patient safety and quality improvement measures and regulatory compliance requirements; creates and implements tools for tracking and trending impact of implemented changes; responsible for the coordination, implementation and evaluation of patient safety initiatives and harm-reduction activities; recommends appropriate actions based on event analysis to the Patient Safety and Adverse Events committee; facilitates process improvement that will support the reduction of medical errors and other factors that contribute to adverse patient outcomes; demonstrates leadership in the areas of human resources, financial management, planning, directing, continuous quality improvement, institutional support and presentation and customer service; promotes a culture of safety by rounding on inpatient care units and ambulatory areas to perform coaching and mentoring on patient safety issues; participates in executive leadership patient safety rounds with leadership team; participates in local, state and/or national activities pertaining to patient safety, as needed; abides by and performs all compliance requirements and policies in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to policies pertaining to confidentiality; requires minimal supervision to provide support for the Patient Safety program; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, equipment or supplies that are necessary to perform essential functions; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and co-workers in persona and via telephone; communicates with the Quality and Safety Director regarding patient safety initiatives activities; and adheres to the general hospital and medical center standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, three years of professional experience in patient safety, risk prevention or quality management and current licensure with the state of Alabama as a registered nurse. A master's degree in a related healthcare field is highly preferred. Experience in management of safety principles is preferred. CPHQ certification is preferred. Black belt or green belt in Six Sigma is preferred.
