Berkeley Lab’s Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) Division is seeking a Chief Development Officer for Research (CDOR).

Who You Are:
The Chief Development Officer for Research will spearhead the cultivation and development of new partnerships and research programs associated with a broad range of sponsors. You are passionate about effectively applying science solutions to the most pressing problems of our day, and have familiarity with today’s geoscience, environmental, and climate science research frontiers. You are an extraordinary communicator, capable of concisely framing technical subjects and activities in ways that align with the needs and goals of diverse research sponsors and supporters and that harness organizational expertise and capabilities. You are drawn to environments where you can originate new collaborations and new research partnerships involving world-class earth science researchers and a breadth of world-class research facilities. You want to help save the world.
What You Will Do:
Based on a comprehensive understanding of the Area’s core research competencies, strategic vision, and opportunity landscape, work closely with Associated Laboratory Director and other EESA scientific leaders on initiative development, program development, and early research program implementation. Oversee the Area’s internal business development strategy, with a focus on new sponsors and Federal-State partnerships, including identification of emerging program priorities, SWOT analysis, harnessing technical team input, and translation of technical concepts and capabilities into value for specific audiences.
Implement a prioritized approach for developing and managing select relationships and external partnerships, particularly with potential non-traditional sponsors, including but not limited to State partners, capital investors, philanthropy, NGOs, industry, and international organizations.
Create new networks and opportunities through engaging in venues that are not currently attended by EESA scientists but that are relevant to the Area’s strategic directions.
Regularly conduct landscape analysis, including performance, marketing, and competitive analyses to identify business opportunities as well as to track the progress of prioritized business development projects
Lead the EESA Strategic Communications Team, including writers, multimedia and graphic specialists, and external vendors with an aim to project EESA’s unique, relevant and important scientific prowess, discoveries, impact, and strategic vision to a range of external audiences, including potential sponsors.
Contribute to enterprise-level activities intended to enhance the effectiveness of and coordination between EESA and Berkeley Lab operational, communication, government affairs, and business development units.
What is Required:
At least 8 years of relevant work experience, including an excellent track record in business development in a high-impact R&D organization, or equivalent background and experience.
Experience facilitating the translation of an organization’s strategic vision and expertise into new programs, partners, and enhanced visibility
Proven and successful experience in prospecting and lead generation
Experience representing diverse technical topics using strong verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
Experience engaging and building relationships, potentially including (a) internally with senior scientific leadership and teams, and (b) externally with sponsor and collaborator contacts across industry, government, non-profits, and academia.
Ability to chart an ambitious long-term path while advancing key components of a program development strategy forward in a timely manner
Ability to persuasively articulate new complex scientific or technical concepts to diverse potential partners, including how the concepts align with partner priorities or directions
Ability to coordinate communication with research, marketing operations, and financial aspects to advance program development strategy
Understanding of the drivers for public interest in environmental and energy research, including Federal and State policy frameworks
Experience managing research programs and researchers
Experience with modern communication tools to enhance the reputation and awareness of an organization and to reach diverse audiences.
Ph.D. in relevant scientific discipline preferred.
