Freshwater resources are increasingly being taxed by the regional impacts of climate, land-use, and population changes. The greater frequency and magnitude of floods and droughts has taken its toll in many regions. Around the world, groundwater storage is declining, pollution is increasing, surface water reservoir storage is low, and major reservoir development has plateaued. Consequently, transboundary and sectoral competition for freshwater has grown. New approaches to quantitative analysis of freshwater systems are key to enhancing sustainability.
